CSUN 2025: Innovation, Connection, and Unforgettable Moments
The rain was falling, yet people were scrambling to get inside the Anaheim Marriott hotel! Canes tapped against the pavement, guide dogs skillfully navigated the crowds, and coffee shops overflowed with attendees eager to discuss the latest breakthroughs in assistive technology. The air was electric with excitement—because this wasn’t just any conference. This was CSUN 2025, the world’s largest event dedicated to accessibility and assistive technology. And let me tell you, my first experience at CSUN was nothing short of life-changing.
A Who’s Who of Accessibility Innovation
CSUN isn’t just about the technology—it’s about the people shaping the future of accessibility. I had the privilege of connecting with some of the most influential names in the field, including:
- NV Access (Quentin and Sean) – We had an in-depth discussion about the future of NVDA, one of the most widely used free screen readers. Their passion for making accessibility free and available to everyone is inspiring.
- WeWALK – Their cutting-edge smart cane continues to revolutionize mobility for blind travelers, integrating GPS, obstacle detection, and smart assistant features.
- See Me Cane – This innovative mobility tool enhances safety and independence with its high-visibility, LED-powered design.
- ViewPlus Technologies – Known for their industry-leading braille embossers and tactile graphics solutions, they are setting new standards for how blind users interact with printed materials.
- Solar Grove Solutions – Their solar-powered adaptive devices blew my mind. The idea of harnessing the sun to power assistive tech? Absolute game-changer.
- Sam from The Blind Life – If you know accessibility on YouTube, you know Sam. Hanging out with him was a blast, and we had some incredible discussions about real-world assistive tech solutions.
The Expo Floor: A Sensory Overload of Innovation
Walking into the CSUN expo hall is like stepping into the future. Imagine an entire ballroom filled with the sounds of talking devices, the rhythmic hum of braille embossers, and the excited chatter of people testing out the latest in accessibility tech.
Some of the coolest products I got to experience firsthand included:
- AI-Powered Assistance – From Microsoft’s Seeing AI to new OCR advancements, artificial intelligence is pushing the boundaries of accessibility.
- New Braille Displays – Companies are making them more affordable, lightweight, and feature-packed, giving blind users better access to digital content.
- Wearable Tech – Smart glasses and audio-enhanced navigation tools are making independent travel easier than ever.
Hollywood, Accessibility, and the Entertainment Industry
One of the most unexpected highlights was meeting a blind actor working in the Hollywood entertainment scene. We had an eye-opening conversation about the challenges and progress being made in the film industry regarding representation and accessibility.
While the industry still has a long way to go, seeing blind actors and content creators gaining recognition is a step in the right direction.
California: Expensive, But Worth Every Penny
Let’s not sugarcoat it—California is expensive as hell. But was it worth it? Absolutely. From networking with industry leaders to experiencing game-changing technology firsthand, every second of CSUN 2025 was an investment in the future of accessibility.
Beyond the conference, I had the chance to explore Anaheim, meet new friends, and brainstorm incredible projects that will continue pushing the accessibility movement forward.
